Sheila Selden Design is the creative talent, skill and business acumen of many years of creating memorable and effective marketing and promotional materials for the web and print. The combination of my skills as a designer, art director, copy writer, videographer, artist, photographer, project manager and marketing consultant set me apart from most. The diversity of my experience is what enables me to embrace the big picture while managing the details that make it happen in the world of commerce. Even my experience as a technology educator aids in communicating process and vision. The diversity of my professional experiences and skill at finding unexpected design solutions that fit the budget and arrive on time make me an exceptional, visionary designer.
Professional History: After completing a 5-year cooperative program in design at the University of Cincinnati College of Design, Architecture and Art, I found myself in New York City working for Milton Glaser of Push Pin Studios and New York Magazine fame. I had the great opportunity to work with some of the industry's best known designers, artists, writers and photographers including George Leavitt who taught me so much about typography. I also worked for Anthony Russell, Inc. as a senior designer working on corporate graphics developing skill as a designer and art director. Eventually I opted to go freelance working on projects for Milton Glaser, George Lois (advertising), The Metropolitan Museum and many others. I started my own business, Sheila Selden Design Associates, consisting of four associated principals in various areas of design and marketing and a junior designer. For nearly ten years my clients included JCPenny's, Marimekko USA, Amoco Fibers and Fabrics, Barnes and Noble, Elizabeth Arden, Weston Industries, Esselte Pendaflex, Canada and Joseph Wetzel Museum Design.
In Vermont, I found challenging opportunities as an independent designer. Initially I worked for Orvis designing, producing and art directing catalogs as well as marketing materials. I worked with the Vermont Country store to develop, design, prototype, art direct and produce new catalogs and marketing materials. I worked with the Southern Vermont Arts Center and Green Mountain Academy on entire marketing campaigns including yearly catalogs, advertising, marketing materials, summer classes catalogs, signage, brochures and posters. For The Weston Playhouse Theatre Company the marketing materials I created for them over six years took them from struggling to fill seats to consistently sold out subscriptions. For the Manchester Music Festival highly sophisticated graphic images carried through the marketing program filled seats for two highly successful years.
I returned to graduate school for an MA in Technology Education and an MS in Business Management. While continuing a limited design business, I taught technology and digital arts. After nine years of teaching and developing my own art I have many new skills in my toolbox to apply to the design and production of projects for print and web to bring those projects to new levels of sophistication and success.
